HMers Clare Beattie and Lee Cunningham attended the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston on 24 June and the Game Fair at Scone Palace on 3 July.
Both days were very positive and it was clear that although the rural sector has been affected by the current financial climate, the value of agricultural land and forestry is increasing. There is still a lack of supply of good quality rural land on the market meaning that closing dates are attracting numerous offers with some agricultural land and forestry achieving 25% + over the asking price. Country houses that would traditionally have been snapped up during boom time are still proving difficult to sell with some remaining on the market for over a year.
The financial institutions continue to express willingness to lend to the rural sector subject to taking security in exchange for the granting of facilities to farmers.
